When I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, I prayed that God gave her plenty of musical talent. He heard me and answered beautifully.
Rachel and I went to hear Abigail sing with the University of Louisville Honor Choir last week, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. As I drove through campus to the School of Music, I got choked up, thinking about her going to to college here.
I’m thankful for her talent, and so very proud of her hard work.
This week marks the feast day of Saint Blaise, who is the patron saint for healthy throats. (among other titles!) According to legend, he healed a boy who had a fishbone stuck in his throat.
I’m hoping to find a Blessing of the Throats ceremony in our area on Friday to take Abigail. I’ve never attended something like that before, but it’s perfect for my talented daughter.

I’ve had my “throat blessed” with the fancy candles a few times. It was never a special ceremony though. One was just after daily mass and the other was a time my mom was sick or something and I remember my dad taking all 4 of us (my mom my dad my sister and me) to the church rectory to do the healing prayer on all of us.
I’ve never seen it done — so I may be thinking it’s some giant ceremony, when it’s really not! It just sounded like a great idea for a singer. 🙂

Abby looks so beautiful and grown up! I remember Holy Spirit doing it as part of the mass on the weekend nearest St. Blaise’s feast day. I just checked the OLOL bulletin from last night and they don’t have anything scheduled, but I bet you could call Fr. Scott and get something worked out.
I know, right? How in the heck is she 17 in a few weeks? Eek!
Well … I suppose I will be calling Lourdes today. Plus, maybe I can talk to Fr Scott about baptizing the newest mini me. 🙂
I only had the blessing done once. It was during a confirmation class when I was in high school. The priest showed up to the class, blessed all our throats and we went on with class.
That’s fun! We’ve never been to one before, so this will be a first for us.
I’d never heard of the blessing of throats but the story of the fishbone reminded me that when I was growing up whenever we ate fish my mother would pick through it thoroughly before giving it to me to eat to be sure there were no bones in it. She was always concerned about a fish bone getting stuck in my throat.
I know you are very proud of your daughters, and rightfully so. I’m glad you chose to share this with us on Spiritual Sundays.

Wow! Only thing I remember about bones in fish when we were small were the tiny bones in canned salmon. Those were generally pretty soft.

I’ve had my throats blessed a few times, but I don’t know many parishes that have kept that tradition anymore. I’m hoping I can find a parish near me, because I’d love to have my son’s throat blessed, too.

We have a very traditional parish located downtown that still have many of the ‘old’ traditions … Latin Mass, First Friday devotions, etc, that will be having a Blessing on Friday. I’d like to find one a little closer to home, but I love that parish as well too. My daughter thought it was a fun idea!
Oh, how nice that you have a traditional parish not too far away. The closest one to us is an hour away, not easily accessible for a daily mass. 🙂
How proud you must be! She is beautiful and I’m sure she is quite the songbird. I am really enjoying learning about the saints from you. My protestant church does not give me much by way of an education in these matters and I find the information tender and fascinating. Thank you.

We have an endless supply of Saints to turn to — for me, one of the most wonderful things to learn is that a lot of them struggled with the same issues that we do — anger, impatience, etc. In other words, life wasn’t always easy for them, either. It helps so much to have someone in our corner!
