Acts 2:1-3
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
We wrap up the Easter season in the Catholic Church today with the celebration of Pentecost. Today marks the birthday of our Church as we know it, with the descent of the Holy Spirit.
Mary and the disciples were gathered to celebrate the Jewish harvest festival that fell fifty days over Passover. The Holy Spirit descended upon them, depicted by a strong wind and tongues of flame. Empowered, the disciples went out to preach to the crowds in Jeruselum and baptized over 3,000 converts. (see Acts)
You’ll see our priests wearing red vestments today, to recall the tongues of fire, as well as our Christian martyrs in Church history.
As laypeople, Pentecost can be a time of rebirth – to call to mind our baptism, and to spread the word about our Faith.
