Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.
In the busy days of being a mother, I’ve blinked and my baby girl is five. She was completely unplanned, but we loved her from the moment we realized her existence.
She challenges me in so many ways – not so much about discipline, but with her amazing spirit. It’s taken me almost 40 years to have half the amount of courage and confidence her tiny body possesses.
I want so much for her, and to protect her from any heartache. Most of all, I want her to know she is loved.
As we celebrate another birthday, this poem is a perfect reminder to take heed of the little things in life and soak them in. They will be gone in a flash.
Happy Birthday, baby girl! I love you!
Ease the pounding of my heart
By quieting of my mind.
Steady my harried pace
With a vision of the eternal reach of time.
Give me,
Amidst the confusions of my day,
The calmness of the everlasting hills.
Break the tensions of my nerves
With the soothing music of the sighing streams
That live in my memory.
Help me to know
The magical restoring power of sleep.
Teach me the art
Of taking minute vacations of slowing down to look at a flower;
To chat with an old friend or to make a new one;
To pat a stray dog;
To watch a spider build a web;
To smile at a child;
Or to read a few lines from a good book.
Remind me each day
That the race is not always the swift;
That there is more life than increasing its speed.
Let me look upward
Into the branches of the towering oak
And know that it grew slowly and well.
Slow me down, Lord,
And inspire me to send my roots deep
Into the soil of life’s enduring values
That I may grow toward the stars
Of my greater destiny.

I can’t believe it.
I truly do LOVE the age of 5, but I’m looking back at pictures and wondering where all the time went.
My boys will be 3 — THREE — in May. What the heck?
