Ending the Struggle: Work Shift

by Dianna Kennedy on September 13, 2012

I’ve heard from a lot of people … “How do you do it all?

Easy answer – I don’t.

There are days (like right now), where I have laundry piled on the coffee table, homeschool books scattered EVERYWHERE, and a blog to do list a mile long.

I’ve read a handful of books about ‘having it all’, and came away feeling rather uninspired. I don’t care about climbing the corporate ladder. I’d rather be teaching the Kaboodle how to climb a tree.

My focus is trying to balance the things that are important to me — my husband and my children. For me, working outside the home is an ends to a means. I enjoy my career as a nurse, I’m relatively good at it, but it’s no longer what defines me.

My dear friend Anne from Modern Mrs Darcy is an incredibly gifted writer, and she’s sharing her thoughts on blending work, life and family. I love it that she understands that it looks differently for all of us … right now, I work weekends, teach the children during the week, and try to hold it all together while my husband works from home and goes to school. Phew!

It ebbs and flows from season to season, and it looks different for all of us. Anne shares her story and takes a look at other mothers ideas of what a work shift looks like for them.

I’m striving to be the best wife and mother I can be – I love it that Anne shines the spotlight on those of us working toward the same goal.

Head over and check out Work Shift: How to Create a Better Blend of Work, Life and Family. You’ll be able to get a sneak peek of Chapter 2 in exchange for a tweet or Facebook post. I’m interested in seeing how the community unfolds over at the Work Shift Facebook Page.

How does balancing work, life and family work for you? I’ll start the conversation off in the comment box, and would LOVE to hear from you!
