All my life, I’ve been in Tornado Alley. From May until October, lazy spring and summer days can be peppered with tornado watches and warnings. Luckily, our family has never experienced the devastation from a tornado, but there have been plenty of close calls.
Around here, there are a few tips to surviving tornado season. A basement or storm cellar is vital, as well as a radio with battery backup. When the electricity goes out, you need some way of knowing where the storm is actually located. When a tornado is spotted, you may only have 30 minutes or less to take cover. If the Civil Defense sirens go off, it’s time to sit up, take notice, and head for shelter. Our children even have tornado drills in schools, to teach them how to take cover in areas without basements.
