So, I’ve been blogging since December of 2007, which pretty much makes me an expert, right?
Wrong!!
Thanks to attending Bloggy Boot Camp, and following the Savvy Blogging blog and hashtag on Twitter, I have a long list of things to fix on my blog, concepts to try, and major no-no’s to avoid at all costs. At this rate, it will be 2012 before I get all the changes implemented.
If I had to start all over, here are the five things I would do differently.
(Compliments of Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop prompts)
1.Start off using WordPress.
Apparently, it’s much better than Blogger, more respected, and higher in SEO – something I’m still scratching my head over. And, all the cool girls use it! I’ll be switching over at some point in the future …. when my sweet web design gal hops on the WordPress wagon with me.
2. Have some ammo for backup.
Life happens. You get on a roll with making people laugh, and suddenly, some virus hits your household, leaving you in laundry up to your eyeballs. That’s when a cache of pre-written posts would come in handy.
3. Have a plan, Stan.
I’ll admit, I’m still bad about doing this. My blog started out as a way to chronicle my pregnancy with my twins, and is still continuing to morph today. I’d be better off if I had at least thought a little bit about what I wanted to do, longer term.
4. Network
Want more comments, and more readers? Join a network, and be kind to your blogging sisters. Create your own tribe … a circle of friends where you visit and comment frequently. If you put out good karma, it will come back to you.
5. Keep it simple, stupid.
Don’t get so worked up about design, and widgets. I went through quite a few blog makeovers, when I really should have been more concerned about what I was writing. Content is what draws people in, and makes them want to stay a while.
